7月 5, 2024, Cycle Path Along the Ill River
Oh, what wonderful cycle paths we have in Vorarlberg! Cycling, no matter whether it's gravel, trekking, racing bike - everything is possible. Every now and then we also come across pedestrians, just ring the bell early enough, say thank you - then it's great :-)

6月 28, 2024, St. Arbogast Church
St. Arbogast pilgrimage church From May to September, a procession to St. Arbogast takes place every Saturday. Since 1767, such processions have been held to St. Arbogast (every Saturday, with minor time differences from May to September). The reason or motivation for the introduction of these processions is not (yet) known. 22 years after its introduction, the "St. Arbogast procession" was already on the verge of being disbanded. As part of the "Josephinian measures", the St. Arbogast chapel was closed and the procession was therefore to be cancelled. The Götzners did not accept the closure and resisted. As can be read in the Götzner local history book, the officials who were supposed to call for obedience were threatened "with stones and physical violence". The following year (1790) it was already permitted to use the St. Arbogast chapel again. The procession was thus also saved. Processions and supplications, like all religious expressions, are shaped by the respective social conditions. This was also the case during the Nazi era. The photo from 1940 shows a St. Arbogast procession on “Ascension Day”. In the week before Ascension Day, the so-called “Cross Week”, supplications to churches in neighboring communities also took place on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. These supplication days were only abolished in the 1960s. One of the reasons may have been the increasing traffic. Since then, a pilgrimage to Rankweil has been held regularly on Ascension Day. During the Nazi dictatorship, church celebrations were silent but impressive demonstrations against the Nazi regime. Anyone who wanted to get ahead during the Nazi era no longer showed up in church. 6月 28, 2024, St. Loy Chapel (Eligius Chapel), Götzis
Chapel of St. Loy (Eligius Chapel), Götzis The Chapel of St. Loy on the way to St. Arbogast was built in 1648. Loy (French for Eligius) was born around 588 near Limoges. Under the kings Chlotar II and Dagobert I he was a goldsmith and mint master at court, where he earned a good reputation both as an official and as a helper of the poor and founder of monasteries. As a companion of Dagobert he probably also came to the Vorarlberg region. In 639 Loy left the court, entered the clergy and became Bishop of Noyon and Tournai (France) in 641. He died around the year 660. Loy, who was widely revered in Vorarlberg and whose holiness was said to have been indicated to his mother by the appearance of an eagle before his birth, is depicted either as a bishop or in elegant work clothes. His individual attributes include blacksmith tools and horseshoes or even a horse's foot, which can be understood as a reference to the wonderful shoeing of a wild horse. Loy is considered the patron saint of miners, carters, goldsmiths and farriers, horse traders and veterinarians and is a helper for farmers in the event of horse diseases. As old people remember well, in a corner of the St. Loy Chapel near Götzis, near the door, you could often find many brooms, which were given as a small offering in times of need or concern, especially in cases of eye diseases, so that "the sexton could clean the chapel with them". - The belief was widespread among the people that a witch could no longer do anything evil and had no more power if her broom was locked up in a church. Is the strange custom also based on such a belief and were the concerns for which brooms were sacrificed all considered to be witchcraft evils? Text / Source: H.
