The listed Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. John is located in Wachenbrunn, a district of the town of Themar in the Hildburghausen district of Thuringia. The Wachenbrunn parish belongs to the Themar parish in the Hildburghausen-Eisfeld church district of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany. The small hall church was built in 1870/71 according to a design by August Wilhelm Döbner in the Romanesque Revival style. The two-story church tower is covered with a slate-covered gable roof between stepped gables, from which a ridge turret rises. The nave, which spans three aisles, also supports a gable roof. An arched frieze is located below the eaves of the nave and tower, as well as on the western gable. The church furnishings date from the time of construction. At the confluence of the Erle and Nahe rivers, in the heart of the medieval town of Schleusingen, stands the mighty Bertholdsburg Castle. From the 13th century onward, it served as the ancestral seat of the Counts of Henneberg and is the oldest residential palace in Thuringia. In the 15th and 16th centuries, the fortified castle was rebuilt into an early modern palace in the Renaissance style. Today, the castle houses the Natural History Museum. Very impressive building!

Bertholdsburg Castle is the most important secular building in southern Thuringia. The castle's origins probably date back to the 13th century.

We had dinner here for my 18th birthday.
