6月 6, 2025, Grotte di Castellana

The caves of the Grotte di Castellana were discovered on January 23, 1938, by Franco Anelli and explored by him and Vito Matarrese. Even before the discovery, the hole (or entrance) in the earth was known, but was only used as a garbage dump. The caves can be visited as part of a guided tour. There are two different tours: one is about one kilometer long, the other is 3 kilometers long. The visit always begins in the Grave, a cave 60 meters deep, 100 meters wide, and 100 meters high. The second path leads to the White Grotto. The stalactites here are the color of alabaster. The second path is only accessible to a limited number of visitors, as the cave has no natural ventilation. Source: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grotte_di_Castellana More about the grotto from me: Unfortunately, pictures are only permitted in the first vault, the Grave. The grotto is privately owned. The temperature inside the grotto is 13 degrees Celsius in the first vault and 16 degrees Celsius afterward, with humidity between 60% and 100%. Sturdy shoes and a jacket are recommended. The limestone is quite slippery.

Very nice cave tour. Tours are also available in English, we recommend booking online at the desired time. Photography is prohibited in most cave chambers and this is enforced.

It is worth mentioning that the castle was the residence of the Counts of Conversano for almost seven hundred years, starting from Norman times. Nowadays, the castle is partly public property and partly private.

Some say that everything related to Conversano "is almost as old as time." The beginnings of the settlement of the current city limits date back at least to the Iron Age, when the local indigenous people founded a settlement called Norba, on the remains of which the city of Conversano was built. In its historical part, at the highest point of the hill, there is the symbol of the city, built of limestone rocks - Castello di Conversano.

square-based tower whose nucleus dates back to the fourteenth century. Around the tower, the remains of a wall with a megalithic base are visible, within which the remains of roads, houses and a basilica-style church with a semicircular apse have emerged, which is remembered under the title of the Annunziata. The village, mysteriously abandoned in the fifteenth century (did its inhabitants move to where Conversano stands today?), however has more ancient origins, dating back to the Bronze Age, as evidenced by some finds from the Peucetian era. According to some, Castiglione could correspond to the locality reported in the Tabula Peutingeriana with the toponym Ad Veneris.

The square-plan tower rises on four levels, each with different architectural and decorative features. The ground floor is delimited by rounded columns at the corners and on its facade there is a sundial indicating the value of the latitude of the city (40°42'18''). The first floor follows, contained by a pair of pilasters with a small balcony in the center with a broken and curved tympanum with plant decorations.

The Aragonese Castle which was built by the Normans around 1054 purely for the purpose of a defensive fortress and became the home of the Acquaviva Counts and was transformed through subsequent alterations into a sumptuous stately home. The fort was built on ancient megalithic walls, dating back to the VI-IV century BC, still visible at the base of the Torre Maestra, the only surviving Norman tower.

Cellamare is an Italian town of 5 727 inhabitants in the metropolitan city of Bari in Puglia. It preserves the old baronial castle of medieval origin (13th century), but rebuilt and adapted from a military fortress to a noble residence in the 16th century. In the countryside, on the road to Rutigliano, a menhir of unspecified date is preserved.

Going along the provincial Conversano-Castellana you can see a hill on which stands a watchtower (14th century BC). The first settlements date back to the Bronze Age, as evidenced by the frequent tomb finds now preserved in the rooms of the Civic Museum in San Benedetto. The place was certainly chosen on the basis of its favorable geographical position as the hill provided an excellent view of the surrounding area; furthermore, the lake formed by the karst depression at the foot of the hill ensured a not insignificant water reserve.

The Monastery The Madonna della Scala abbey is located in the territory of Noci (Bari) and the diocese of Conversano - Monopoli. It is located in the Murge area at 400 meters above sea level, about the same distance from Bari, Taranto and Matera. The monastery was begun on 8 August 1930 on a project by the architect Ugo Zanchetta and then continued by the engineer Fr Agostino Lanzani, Benedictine monk. The building looks like a massive stone construction located on the top of the hill of the same name, isolated in the middle of the surrounding countryside. Inside, a large cloister leads to the refectory, the church, the corridor (South East sides) of the cells, to the guesthouse on the north side of the cloister. The church, built in the Apulian Romanesque style, was blessed by the abb. Emmanuele Caronti (1954), later consecrated by Archbishop M. Magrassi in the 15th centenary of St. Benedict (1980). The building is grafted onto a pre-existing 13th century Romanesque church residue of a Cassinese grange.
