In the square in front of the main entrance of the Villaret tunnel there are the technical rooms serving the mining activity. The first building to the left of the tunnel entrance housed the compressors that allowed the miners to use compressed air hammers and forced ventilation, as well as the rooms for converting electrical energy. In the low and long building to the right of the tunnel there were: • the lamp factory, for supplying the carbide lamps to be used in the tunnel and for their maintenance, • the forge for working the tools and especially the tips of the pneumatic hammers, • the carpentry shop for treating the wood to be used to support the tunnels. In the square other buildings were subsequently built, used as warehouses and garages as well as workshops for the maintenance of the locomotives. In more recent times one of them was transformed into a chapel serving the Father Kolbe holiday home. The yard was crossed by tracks for the transit of the trains that carried the waste material outside, which was then deposited on the slope towards the Dora. Tracks also arrived from the opposite side of the slope, from the Preylet tunnel. The wagons loaded with anthracite passed the small bridge over the Dora and the road, then entered the tunnel to reach, via the descent, the loading station in the tunnel of the train headed for Arpy. After 1959 the tracks carried the coal wagons to the washery located to the west where the anthracite treatment previously carried out in Morgex took place.

There is a legend that hovers around the Rutor glacier which tells that the place now occupied by the glacier was once a large green meadow where the cows of a rich farmer grazed. One day God wanted to test his goodness and sent him a beggar to ask for some milk to feed his family. The rich farmer, instead of giving him some of his milk, mocked the beggar and, out of insult, ordered his workers to pour the buckets of fresh milk on the lawn. The beggar reacted by casting a curse on him that made it snow for days on end. Accompanying the snow was also a very cold wind which caused the green pastures to turn into ice. Thus the Rutor glacier was born.

Trail no. 3 Difficulty: E (bit.ly/CLASSIFICAZIONE_CAI) One of the most beautiful and famous trails in our area. Start from La Joux and follow trail no. 3. The first waterfall can be reached in a quarter of an hour, while to see the second (1850 m) and the third waterfall (2000 m) it takes about 1 hour of walking from the first. To admire them in all their splendor you have to make two short detours to the right. Then you return to the main trail, and continue towards Lac du Glacier (2143 m) and take the trail on the left that leads to the Deffeyes refuge where you can enjoy the magnificent view of the Rutor glacier and the entire La Thuile valley.

Very beautiful, unlike the first waterfall easily reachable you have to walk a little more. Be careful on the path that is wet because of the water of the waterfalls

5月 21, 2024, Prima cascata del Rutor
The first waterfall is the easiest to reach and is located about 20 minutes from the start. Although it is the easiest to reach, you need to be careful because, being wet, you could slip, so remember suitable shoes and be careful.

This path was restored to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Rutor waterfalls, so called, after 1860, by Abbé Chanoux, in the first years of his rectorship of the Little Saint Bernard Hospice. Generated by the stream of the same name, the waterfalls had already begun to attract tourist attention towards the end of the 1800s from a public increasingly sensitive to natural beauty, and for this reason, over time, they have been the subject of various enhancement interventions.
