9月 18, 2025, Cattedrale di San Nicola (Cathedral of St. Nicholas), Sassari

Very impressive from the outside. I didn't go inside because they charged a €3 entrance fee (September 2025).

Sassari is the second largest city in Sardinia. It was founded by the Phoenicians and has experienced various cultural influences over the centuries. This is reflected in the architecture and cultural heritage of the city. It is definitely worth a visit.

Typical square with many bars and cafes. Here and there you can find street musicians in the evening.

Since 1331 it has been the most important square in the city. It is called this because until 1878 the Aragonese castle stood (today demolished).

It takes its name from the Aragonese Castle that stood in this area since 1300. In 1877 the castle was demolished and the space thus freed gave life to the square as we see it today in front of the contemporary La Marmora barracks. In 1800 the square was the favorite spot for elegant walks and on holidays the music band played there. It became therefore the soul and the heart of the city. When Sassari then expanded, the ideal city center moved from Piazza Castello to the new great Piazza d’Italia. In the 1950s, the demolition of some low buildings and the construction of two skyscrapers further modified the square. More recently, the numerous palm trees that shaded the square have been eliminated, because they were hit by the red weevil, a dangerous parasite that attacks especially this type of trees. Under the square runs an archaeological path between the walkways and some underground rooms that had belonged to the Castle. The entrance is from a low glass block structure. The visit is really worth it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9tCMyZJPIIk

The most impressive part of Sassari's Cathedral of St. Nicholas is its imaginative Baroque facade with playful pedestals, balconies, coats of arms, pilasters and floral chapter decorations. Watching over this limestone work of art is an imposing statue of the city's patron saint: San Nicola da Bari, Saint Nicholas of Myra. It is only crowned at the top of the facade by the Lord God with a globe. On the lower floor of the tripartite gabled façade there are three niches with the three martyrs of Sassari: Gavino, Proto and Gianuario. The facade, which is strongly reminiscent of the Spanish colonial baroque in South America, stands out strongly from the rest of the outer walls. The sacristy of Sassari Cathedral also houses the Duomo Museum, where, with a bit of luck, you can admire paintings, silverwork, statues, religious cult objects and liturgical vestments.

Beautiful historic center and if you happen to be in the mid-August period you will surely come across the typical festival, the Descent of Candelieri which is held every year on August 14th.

Every year on August 14th, the “Discesa dei Candelieri” is celebrated in honor of the Virgin who would have saved the city from the plague. The Candelieri are giant candlesticks that, since the Middle Ages, represent the Gremi, ie the city guilds of arts and crafts. This festival consists of a costume procession, during which the representatives of each Gremio carry on their shoulders their own heavy "candlestick" (a large wooden column that symbolizes a candle). The procession starts in the center of the city and descends to the northern limit of the historic center, ending with a solemn mass when it reaches Santa Maria di Betlem. This festival has been included by UNESCO among the World Heritage Sites in 2013.

The tomb of Molafà is located within the municipal territory of Sassari (Sardinia). Leaving Sassari towards Alghero on state road 127 bis, after about 5 kilometers from the city center, you reach a level crossing and the very small station of Molafà. Not far away, on the slopes of the hill on your right, lies the tomb, which takes its name from the place. In early Middle Ages it was used and known as a rock church, but in reality it was a grave dating back to the nuragic era . This tomb is defined “a prospetto architettonico”, that is, a grave excavated in the rock (such as the pre-Nuragic domus de janas) which reproduces in the outer facade both a stele and an exedra, that are typical elements of the Tombs of the Giants. Inside, there are several burial cells. This type of grave is widespread in the territory of Sassari, but is absent elsewhere in Sardinia. There are no fences or gates, so you can visit it freely. Near the tomb of Molafà stands the homonymous, mono-towered nuraghe.

The facade, which is strongly reminiscent of the Spanish colonial baroque in South America, stands out strongly from the rest of the outer walls: the Gothic nave is far less picturesque than the imposing entrance area. The interior of the church, on the other hand, is dominated by medieval Gothic with partially exposed, high ribbed vaults. The sacristy of Sassari Cathedral also houses the Duomo Museum, where, with a bit of luck, you can admire paintings, silverwork, statues, religious cult objects and liturgical vestments. Palazzo Ducale is a historic palace in Sassari built in the second half of the eighteenth century. Today it is the seat of the municipal administration. The building was built in the period between 1775 and 1805 - by Lombard workers directed by the Piedmontese architect Carlo Valino - at the behest of Don Antonio Manca Amat, nephew of Diego to whom he owed the title of Marquis of Mores and who in 1775 had fief of the island of Asinara and the title of duke. However, he died a few months before seeing the building completed so that the first to settle there was his nephew, Don Vincenzo Manca Amat, Duke of Vallombrosa [1]. After him it was inhabited by other private individuals, then it was occupied by the Prefecture, later by the provincial administration and finally, in 1878, by the municipality of Sassari which took it over to the municipal patrimony. From a social point of view, the construction of the new Doge's Palace expressed the need to strengthen the predominant role of the family towards the new emerging classes and in particular the "colony" of Genoese merchants who controlled the trade in food and livestock and which therefore it represented a fundamental and fearful element of the Sassari economy.
