ソラーノは、丘陵地帯のマレンマの中心部に位置する、凝灰岩に掘り込まれた古代の城塞都市です。この集落は、ルネサンス期の軍事建築の例である堂々としたオルシーニ要塞と、レンテ川の谷全体を見渡せる自然の要塞化されたテラスであるマッソ・レオポルディーノに支配されています。 この城塞都市は、岩盤に直接掘り込まれた狭い路地、階段、通路が密集した網の目状の構造が特徴です。集落の外側には、古代エトルリアの深い通路のネットワークである「ヴィエ・カーヴェ」考古学公園が広がっており、この公園は中心部と周辺のネクロポリスを結んでいます。

サン・カシャーノ・デイ・バーニの集落であるチェッレ・スル・リーゴは、石造りの家々と、依然として本物のトスカーナのライフスタイルを物語る眺めを持つ、シンプルでまとまったスタイルが特徴です。その景観を特徴づけるのは、際立った要素であり、古代の防御システムの記憶である塔です。ここから、周囲の田園風景、丘陵地帯や耕作地の間へと視界が開け、トスカーナのあまり知られていないこの一角の静けさと本質をすべて伝えています。

The village of Cetona is located at the foot of Mount Omino. Its historic center is perfectly preserved, characterized by a dense network of narrow stone alleys. Cetona has, in fact, been awarded an Orange Flag by the Touring Club.

Tuscan towns seem to divide into 2 categories, those on the "tourist trail" and those not. For some reason Radicofani seems to be "not", even though it is full of present-day charm and (often uncharging) history. It is a stiff climb to get to from the floor of Val d'Orcia, even when cycling while the walking effort is truly epic, but worth it! We stayed in an utterly charming tiny cottage, Casa del Ciliego, and ate in one of the numerous small restaurants - plenty were open, even on a quietist Sun evening. Stocked up in the amazing tiny grocery, hidden away in the ancient 'ghetto' part of the town. You can also buy enough to make a full meal quite easily here.

From just outside the town, the view that opens onto Pitigliano and its ancient walls is simply fantastic.
