The castle is located on a hill 520 meters above sea level on the watershed between the Staffora valley and the Curone valley. In 1743, according to the Treaty of Worms, Pozzol Groppo, called Pozzolo del Groppo, was united with the Kingdom of Sardinia and became part of the province of Bobbio. In 1801 the territory was annexed to Napoleonic France until 1814. On 11 April 1889 the last heir of the Malaspina, the Marquis Alberto Malaspina, died.
