10月 15, 2024, Grotta Boscariello

Definitely not accessible by bike, at least not at this time of year. The path is completely overgrown, and even on foot it was barely passable. But the grotto is worth the effort!

S. Angelo in Palombara seems, more than a sacred place, a solitary and massive fortress. News of the locality and the Abbey can be found in documents of less than one thousand. The Diploma of Landolfo, Archbishop of Benevento, which contains the act of reconstruction or foundation of the Diocese of Sant 'Agata dei Goti, dated 14 December 970, speaks of the summit of the mountain called Palombara, as the boundary of the new Diocese. Even if there is no express mention of the church, the recall of the territory suggests that there must have been something there that could give rise to conflicts of jurisdiction in the future. The first act in which S. Angelo a Palombara is explicitly named is the diploma of Henry II dated 6 March 1022; those of Corrado follow, 8 June 1038; William, 1070; Pope Gregory VII, December 3, 1084; Pope Anacleto, 1130 and 1139. They are deeds in which the possession and dependence of numerous abbeys with their respective appurtenances and endowments as well as other real rights over people and things is recognized to the Monastery of Santa Sofia in Benevento.

The Castle of Arienzo "Castem Vetus" which dominates Mons Argentium, known today as Monte Castello, dates back to the 7th century and was built by the Lombards to first defend the Duchy and then the Principality of Benevento. Due to its strategic position, the castle was a lookout post over the entire valley below. From 879/882, the city of Suessola was raided and destroyed by the Saracens. After the destruction of the city, following a fire, part of the Suessolani took refuge on Mount Argentarium, where there was a castle. In 1135 King Ruggero II D'Altavilla, known as the Norman, asked for it to be demolished. The latter, having to leave for Sicily, feared that in his absence the soldiers of Rainulfo could settle in the fortress and control the vast territory from above. His order was only partially carried out and later the castle was rebuilt by his son Guglielmo. From 1135, after the destruction of the Arienzo castle, the inhabitants went down to the valley where they built the new Castle of Arienzo, known as "the Terra Murata". The castles of Arpaia, Cancello, Maddaloni, Casertavecchia were built on the highest peaks of the surrounding mountains.

S. Angelo a Palombara, seen from the Caudina valley, and more particularly in the stretch between the locality (Botteghino) of San Felice Cancello and Arienzo, seems, more than a sacred place, a solitary and massive fortress, leaning forward on the side of the mountain , almost tending to watch over the industrious and fruitful plain. Nor does it lose this characteristic when you see it along the hills that the railway to Benevento touches to go up to Arpaia or when you run along the Appia, after Santa Maria a Vico. Boscariello cave. Challenging, but not impossible, the gathering brought a cheerful snake of Bikers up, through trees and bushes, along the slopes of Monte Sant'Angelo, to the large cave (142 meters high, surveyed by CAI in the 1970s) The cave has an uncontaminated and primordial aspect, with a large and deep room (sixty-three meters of planimetric development and thirty-one of depth). The beautiful panorama you can enjoy ranges from Vesuvius to Capri and embraces the whole territory https://www.sciscianonotizie.it/grotta-del-boscariello-alla-ricerca-del-tesoro-del-brigante-in-centinaia-alla-passeggiata-creaviva/

A huge 60-meter-long cave that climbs up to huddle on the bottom with a drop of 31 meters. The floor is covered with material from the collapses, in the center of the main room there is a large chasm that brings light into the cave.
