アマルフィの素晴らしい場所です。

One of Giovanni Guareschi's (1908-1968) wonderfully told short stories, popular far beyond the borders of Italy, featuring his two protagonists, Don Camillo and Peppone, is titled "Autumn." While most of his stories have a humorous tone, this one deals with a serious topic: the national commemoration of the fallen on November 4th. In a heated discussion with the priest, the communist mayor, Peppone, expresses his views as follows: "The people are fed up with all these wars and victories. The people know very well what war is and don't need speeches and appeals that glorify it." Don Camillo shook his head. "You're on the wrong track, Peppone. Nobody wants to glorify war. It's simply a matter of paying tribute and expressing gratitude to all those who suffered and lost their lives in this war." (G. Guareschi)

Overlooking the sea, the collegiate church of Santa Maria Maddalena has stood since 1274 on the remains of an ancient fortress, as a sign of gratitude for the liberation of the village from the Saracens. Its rococo façade, unique on the coast, is a little gem. Every 22nd July, the feast of the saint enlivens the town with an evocative procession and the scent of the “sarchiapone”, a long pumpkin stuffed and baked in the oven, queen of the table.

It is the largest beach in the area and it could not be otherwise, given that Amalfi bears the name of the entire Coast. A crossroads for travelers, a must-see for anyone who sets foot in these parts, it is often also the most popular. Here, bathing establishments alternate with stretches of free beach, among colorful umbrellas and postcard views. But be careful: on summer days, especially on weekends, finding a place can become a small feat... unless you arrive at dawn, with the breeze and the first sun.

The square is currently being renovated, but the monument is clearly visible through the construction fence. It reflects Italy's turbulent history in both world wars!
