The salt warehouses are located on the Upper Trave, directly next to the Holsten Gate. They were built between 1579 and 1745. They are a group of warehouses in the Brick Renaissance style. The warehouses are located on Lübeck's Upper Trave, directly next to the Holsten Gate. Until 1839, the warehouse closest to the Holsten Gate was owned by the "Oldesloe Saltworks." This is indicated by a relief in the clinker brick of the facade. Originally, the warehouse buildings were used to store salt brought from Lüneburg via the Old Salt Road and later via the Stecknitz Canal, as well as salt extracted from the Oldesloe Saltworks and brought by barges on the Trave. This salt was exported from Lübeck throughout Scandinavia as the basis of its wealth at the time. The salt was primarily used to preserve fish caught in Norway and Scania, thus enabling the herring trade with the inland regions as a Lenten food. The beach in Hörnum is well-visited but not as crowded as, for example, Westerland. It's a fine sandy beach, and the water is remarkably calm, unlike Westerland, Wenningstedt, or Rantum! Teens dominate Hörnum, and you can feel it. At 32, I suddenly felt "toooooo old" 😂 Great if you want to get away from it all!
