This artificial lake was created by damming the Turritecava stream in the late 1930s. Its protected location makes it an excellent refuge for birds. Canyoning is possible nearby on the Rio Selvano, a tributary of the Turritecava.

Ponte della Maddalena, or Ponte del Diavolo, is one of those places that will leave you speechless. It is located in Borgo a Mozzano and is truly unique with its very high arch and slightly crooked shape that makes it different from any other medieval bridge. It is absolutely worth stopping: the atmosphere is special. Crossing it on foot is an experience, and if you are on a bike, be careful of the stone section that can be slippery. There is also a bar nearby with a beautiful view of the bridge, perfect for a break before getting back on the road.

It probably happened around the year 1100, on the orders of Matilda di Canossa. The first legend surrounding the bridge originated from this period and it was given its nickname the 'Devil's Bridge'. In Italian it is also called Ponte del Diavolo. Around that time, a man named Saint Julian was working on the construction. Because the work was hard and slow, he decided to make a pact with the devil. The devil would finish the bridge in one night, in exchange for the soul of the first living creature to cross the bridge. This happened, only Saint Julian made sure that it was a dog that crossed the bridge first and not a human. Part 2 / Day 8 Barga, In search of cooling – ‘dessert walk’. The sun has reached its peak during our lunch. The temperatures are rising in the old town. Not a breath of wind blows through the narrow alleys. City walls groan under the heat. Locals hide behind their thick house facades. The calories burned have been amply replenished by lunch. However, we do not turn down the proposed dessert walk. On the panoramic terrace in front of the imposing Duomo di San Cristoforo we literally reach the highest point in Barga. The sun burns the earth and its subjects. Heaven is within reach, but our time has not yet come. Wisely we continue looking for cooling in the lower-lying holy houses. Churches and chapels are excellent buildings to calm the heated minds. The further we descend through the narrow streets, the more sweet smells stimulate our brains. Just outside the city walls, in a sea of shade, we have an appointment with Theobroma. Theobroma Capolavori di Dolcezza is a paradise that specializes in gelato, yogurt and che. All these delicacies in cool colors and scents ask to be tasted. In this heaven on earth, where masterpieces of sweets surpass works of god 😉, we conclude our acquaintance with Barga. The city walls of Lucca, like those of Pisa, are well preserved, making them ideal for wonderful walks and bike rides. Characteristic of the city walls are the wide tree-lined avenues and the beautiful views over the city. The city walls were built around 1500 and completed in 1645.
