Opposite the cathedral is the large Royal Farm. A magnificent 12th-century residence, the farm is considered the oldest inhabited wooden house in Europe. The name "Royal Farm" comes from the fact that the Norwegian King Sverre (1151-1202) was born and raised here as the illegitimate son of his mother Gunnhild, who was married to a brother of the Faroese Bishop Roes and had fled from Norway to Kirkjubøur.

The whitewashed St. Olav's Church was originally built in 1111. It is the oldest village church in the Faroe Islands. To prevent it from sinking into the sea, it was rebuilt in 1874 and given its present form.
