St. Herculaneum, Bishop of Brescia in the 6th century, spent his final years as a hermit in Campione del Garda. According to legend, after his death, many towns around Lake Garda fought so fiercely over his remains that they decided to place them in a small boat and entrust them to the lake's waters. Miraculously, the boat landed in the Gulf of Maderno in front of St. Andrew's Church, at the spot still marked today by a stone inscription and an iron gate. And this place became sacred, because according to popular belief, anyone who fell into the water here was miraculously saved.

The parish church of San Michele Arcangelo di Gaino was built between the 17th and 18th centuries thanks to the contribution of the Delai, local nobles who owned paper mills and forges. The new church was built on the hill in front of the ancient church of San Michele, dating back to the 15th century, of which the characteristic bell tower is still visible. The ancient building probably stood on the remains of an older fortress, of which no trace remains. At the end of the sixteenth century the ancient church had three altars: the main one dedicated to San Michele, the one dedicated to San Rocco and the Holy Trinity, of which fragments of frescoes from the beginning of the fifteenth century still survive today. The church of Gaino was erected as a parish in 1662 and obtained complete autonomy compared to the mother church of Toscolano in 1707.
