The Schaumburg Domain near Schalkau in Thuringia The Schaumburg Domain near Schalkau in Thuringia looks back on a long history, even if few visible traces remain today. Originally, the Schaumburg was a medieval hilltop castle, probably built as early as the 12th century. It served to secure the trade route and control the surrounding area. Over the centuries, the castle changed hands several times and was remodeled and expanded. Over time, however, it lost its military significance and was partially destroyed during the Peasants' War (1524/25). Later, a manor, the so-called Schaumburg Domain, was built on the site of the former castle complex. At that time, a domain usually referred to a large agricultural holding, often owned by the state or a royal house, whose income flowed directly into the state treasury or was used to support the estate.

The "Gypsy Oak" near Schalkau in Thuringia is a listed tree and a well-known natural monument in the Sonneberg district. It is located at the foot of the Schaumberg mountain and is a popular destination for hikers and nature lovers. According to legend, the name "Gypsies" (now Sinti and Roma) often settled here in the past because they had to camp outside of the villages.
