The first historical information about Madonna di Campiglio dates back to 1188 and is contained in a letter to Corrado II da Beseno, Bishop of Trento. Built between 1894 and 1895 on the initiative of the entrepreneur Franz Joseph Österreicher, the neo-Gothic-Tyrolean style church replaced the old priory church, annexed to the hospice and between the two parts of the new recently inaugurated Hotel Des Alpes from Österreicher. The imperial family of Austria financed some internal decorations, still visible today together with the entrepreneur's tomb. It remained the main church of the town until 1972, when the new and larger church of Santa Maria “Nuova” was built nearby. The church preserves some artistic works of particular value: the very ancient Crucifix and the altar with doors from the late Gothic era.
