According to a document dated October 15, 1344, Duke Friedrich of Austria assured the hermits of the Witenbach estate in a letter and placed it under the special protection of the bailiff of Wolhusen. In January 1479, Pope Sixtus IV granted the residents of Entlebuch the privilege of including the cross, the crown of thorns and nails in their national banner with the beech tree.
