According to legend, the chapel's origins date back to a hunter who had a high stand on the "Moari-Tann" border fir tree that stood here at the time. One day, as he fell from the tree, a shot went off but didn't wound the hunter. In gratitude, he subsequently attached a votive tablet to the fir tree. In the following years, the tree apparently became a place of pilgrimage, and many pilgrims hung their crutches and offering sticks in the tree. In 1899, farmers from the "Schnaitter Viertel" (Schnait Quarter) built the present Maria-Tann forest chapel on the site where the border fir tree stood. The fate of the old fir tree is unknown.

There are several routes to the Stoißer Alm. I drove up from Hammer. A very nice alpine pasture with a restaurant. Great views of the surrounding mountains.
