The Cathedral of Santa Maria Matricolare (Mother Church), commonly known as Verona Cathedral, is the cathedral of the Diocese of Verona and one of the city's most important places of worship. It is located on a small square, Piazza Vescovado, just a short walk from Ponte Pietra and the Church of Sant'Anastasia. The cathedral complex includes the 12th-century Baptistery, the Canons' Cloister, the Church of Sant'Elena, and the remains of an early Christian basilica. The imposing and magnificent interior of the three-aisled cathedral features a five-arched cross vault supported by eight marble columns. At the end of the central nave, designed by the architect Michele Sanmicheli, is the main chapel. The chapels are decorated in the Renaissance style. The altarpiece in the Cartolari-Nichesola Chapel is by Titian. This large oil painting from 1535 depicts the Assumption of Mary. In the foreground, the apostles are gathered around the empty sarcophagus.

The former abbey church of San Zeno is one of Verona's most important churches. It was built in the 12th and 13th centuries. While much of the church is Romanesque, Gothic elements are already evident in the ceiling. The campanile and the large rose window of the facade are distinctive features among Verona's city churches. On June 16, 1973, the parish church was granted the honorary title of Basilica minor.
