The Novelist and the Archivist From a 17th-Century Venetian Trial to the Anonymous Manuscript of The Betrothed by Claudio Povolo Paolo Orgiano's House. A 16th-century building, linked to a legal case that inspired Manzoni's "The Betrothed." Held between 1605 and 1607, by order of the Council of Ten, first by the courts of Vicenza and then by that of Padua, the trial against Paolo Orgiano describes a long series of acts of violence, threats, and abuse committed by the Vicenza nobleman, aided by his cousin Tiberto Fracanzan and a band of thugs, and with the protection of his uncle Settimio Fracanzan, against the inhabitants of the small village of Orgiano, in the Lower Vicenza area. The plot, narrative intrigue, protagonists, and images evoked by the trial file surprise the reader with their numerous parallels with Manzoni's masterpiece. In this volume, first published by the Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti in Venice in 1993, Claudio Povolo examines this surprising series of coincidences, also outlining the history of the trial file against Paolo Orgiano, now preserved in the State Archives of Venice, and the institutional profile of those who, working in the archives of the Venetian Republic and subsequent governments, could have had contact with Alessandro Manzoni's cultural circle. Claudio Povolo is a full professor of History of Political Institutions in the Department of Historical Studies at the University of Venice. He researches topics related to the history of criminal proceedings and the administration of justice from the 16th to the 19th centuries.
