The church is dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta and was built between 1975 and 1980 based on a design by Finnish architect Alvar Aalto. The church is located in Riola di Vergato, a town in Emilia on the slopes of the Apennines, on a plot of land bordered by the Reno River. It is the first Christian church designed by Aalto, as well as his only Italian building project. It was strongly desired by the great Cardinal of Bologna Giacomo Lercaro.
