An ancient castle located north of the Monterufoli Forest, Micciano stands out from its high reddish gabbro cliff called the 'Pinzo', which faces the hill on which the village of Libbiano stands, separated from the deep Adio Valley. Its name appears to derive from the Latin 'Fundus Mitianus or Maecianus', the name of a Roman legionary who, benefiting from the 'Julian Law', was gifted a large plot of land in that area in exchange for valorous military deeds. The oldest document of the small village's history, dating back to 947, is preserved in the Episcopal Curia of Volterra and refers to the investiture of Giovanni di Giovanni as parish priest, while a papal bull from Pope Alexius III, dated 1076, confirms the donation of Micciano and its court to the Abbey of Monteverdi by Emperor Henry II of Saxony.

I consider it one of the most beautiful in the area, there is asphalt, paths, dirt roads and forest roads, dirt roads that are real stony ground and stretches of forest roads with mud, lots of mud. After leaving Volterra, with its breathtaking views of the whole of its green hills, you arrive at Montecatini VC, a small and charming village. Continuing, we can see the old copper mine with the "Alfredo" well, the mine from which Montecatini was born, then Montedison. Along the way we will encounter the dam, a 19th century artifact that can be visited, and the wind turbines. Leaving the dirt road for the forestry, after a few kilometers between beaten track and road full of mud, we meet the astronomical observatory and the first windmill (ruins) to which I refer the link for the history: https://www.valderatoscana.it/lajatico-i-mulini-a-vento-di-orciatico/. Even further ahead, right the second mill (another Ruin), where the millstones lying on the ground are visible. Continuing we arrive in the village of Orciatico. Delightful and typical Tuscan village all to be discovered. After a long descent we return to Volterra.
