St. Ulrich Chapel

A dead-ice basin is a dry, swampy, or water-filled depression formed by the melting of dead ice. Blocks of ice that break away from the glacier tongue during melting and remain there are called dead ice. Dead-ice basins in which a water-retaining layer has developed, or whose steep slopes sometimes extend below the groundwater level, are water-filled, swampy, or boggy. Their funnel shape allowed rain and meltwater to collect. These small bodies of water have experienced varying degrees of siltation and moor development, even within the same basin. A lovely place to pause and take a breather. You can only look inside the chapel. The interior is closed off by a grille. There are two benches next to the chapel. Ideal for resting.

After about 1.6 km, St. Ulrich's Chapel awaits you. You are not allowed to go into the chapel, but you can still take photos. It is also a suitable place to take a short break because of the shade and the bench.

At the beginning of the Way of the Cross in Urtlgraben, the path goes up a little steeply. It is not possible to use it with a stroller or wheelchair without assistance. You walk through a dense beech forest. You can enjoy the Way of the Cross in peace under the shady canopy of leaves. A bench at the side of the path invites you to linger. Dogs must be kept on a leash, as from here on you may encounter wild animals!

The monastery church is really impressive. Next to the church there is a café and a garden center with public toilets. Dogs are not allowed in the cemetery. The most interesting things about the former monastery church are the cast stone Pietà (ca. 1430) and the choir stalls (ca. 1600). The gilded shrine with the bones of the blessed Kaspar Stanggassinger (d. 1899) is inserted into the "Salzburg Altar".
