The Steinach river flows almost level between Steinach and Mitwitz. A footpath and cycle path runs along its banks, with several benches along the edge.

Beautiful restaurant with good food in a wonderful location.

Especially recommended in the early morning. That's when numerous waterfowl congregate here.

Pure nature

In one of the wonderfully told stories about the two protagonists, "Don Camillo and Peppone," conceived by the Italian writer Giovanni Guareschi, the Virgin Mary also plays a role. Peppone's youngest son is very ill, and so one evening the communist mayor goes to the church with five large candles. Don Camillo intends to place them before the crucifix on the high altar, but Peppone objects and wants the candles placed by the chapel of the Virgin Mary: "That one belongs to your party. Light them in front of that one over there, who doesn't engage in politics." After he leaves, Don Camillo—who, as always, is conversing with the crucified Christ—pray earnestly to "not be harsh with him." The dialogue continues: "And why should I?" whispered Christ. "By honoring my mother, he fills my heart with gentleness. I only dislike it a little that he called her 'that one over there.'" Don Camillo shook his head. “You misheard,” he objected. “He said, ‘Light them all up before the Holy Immaculate Virgin in that chapel there.’” (Giovanni Guareschi in “Five and Five”)
