Characteristic place

Its construction begins in the early 1600s and ends only a century later. Commissioned by the Jesuits after the dissolution, in 1767, it remained abandoned to be restored and enlarged a few years later, in 1785, becoming a cathedral in place of the Cathedral of San Corrado or old Cathedral which stands in the port area.

Cathedral of Molfetta

The current cathedral, which stands on the site of an older building, called Santa Maria de Episcopio by the sources, was built during the 12th century in the Norman age, datable between 1125 (beginning of the construction of the crypt) and 1180 (completion of the upper church). The building was consecrated only a century later, on May 23, 1283.

The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta is the cathedral of Giovinazzo and a co-cathedral of the diocese of Molfetta-Ruvo-Giovinazzo-Terlizzi.
