This monument was built in memory of Juan Sebastián Elcano, one of the most distinguished important figures in Getaria. The sculpture displays elements of the Art Deco style, which was in vogue during the period in which it was built. It sits on an old bastion of the wall of Getaria, which serves as its base. The monument is crowned with a Winged Victory of Samothrace, in the style of the figureheads which adorned the prow of the vessels. A nice little town along the coast! Two special things we learned about this town. Juan Sebastian Elkano was an Offizier in the Armada of Magellan. After Magellan died on an island in Southeast Asia Elkano continued the trip on the last remaining ship of five who started. So with his “Victoria” he was the first to really succeed to sail around the world and come home (1519 to 1522) Every year there is a swimming competition between Getaria and Zarautz (alternating with Zarautz and Getaria) The water always seem to boil from all the people crossing the bay by swimming almost 4km! Our friends of San Sebastián have a large Collection of medals from taking part in this competition.
