Since Aken was established in the High Middle Ages as a planned town at the intersection of the roads from Köthen (Anhalt) to Zerbst and from Dessau to Calbe (Saale), it also had a city gate at each entrance. Initially, the town was protected by a palisade wall, but later a stone city wall was built, first mentioned in 1335. Today, three of the four gate towers are still preserved.[1] The Köthen Gate Tower is the most representative and is also the tallest gate tower in the town. It was built in 1551; its predecessor dates back to 1288. Presumably, the existing building was expanded. The 21-meter-high tower with a floor area of 25 m²[2] was built of rubble stone, unlike the Burgtorturm and the Dessau Gate Tower, which are made of brick. It is plastered in its upper section and divided by corner blocks. It also features a Renaissance gable and, since 1900, a clock tower on the north and south sides. The tower was restored in 1996. A brick gate still remains next to the tower.[3][4] A stone monument protection plaque by Robert Propf was installed on the side facing the city.
