The Seven Graves: On April 9, 1945, young Wehrmacht soldiers dug foxholes for a defensive position on the Abtsberg of the Fahner Heights north of Eschenbergen on the district border with Döllstädt. They came under fire from an American reconnaissance tank. Seven 17- and 18-year-olds died, the rest of the troops surrendered and were sent to the Bad Kreuznach prison camp. One seriously wounded man died from his injuries during transport. “Because of the condition of the bodies,” the priest decided that the fallen would not be buried in the Eschenbergen cemetery, but on the Abtsberg. There were seven crosses with the names of the soldiers there until 1953, which were then replaced by a monument. The stone bears a name plaque entitled “FALLEN ON April 9, 1945”.
