The name of the lake was first recorded in the form Tegarinseo in 796, when the princely brothers Oatkar and Adalbert founded a monastery on the tegarin seo, which is Old High German and means large lake. A Celtic root word meaning lord or prince is possible, but also the origin of Lehm-Tiegel, which is assumed for neighboring place names such as Tegernbach or Tegerndorf. In September 2021, after only about six months of construction, this larch wood footbridge was reopened. It spans the Mangfall River, which flows out of Lake Tegernsee here and heads north. A successful construction that now replaces the aging bridge. In April 2020, it was determined that its stability could no longer be guaranteed, and the footbridge was completely closed. Be sure to get off your bike and take in the scenery.

Rottach-Egern is a municipality in the Upper Bavarian district of Miesbach in the Bavarian Oberland. The municipal administration is based in the Rottach district.
