I passed by there on August 18, 2025, during my "Hamburg Energy Networks Return Trip" tour. You can take a look at this tour. That was my route home from work. The scenery is beautiful throughout. A 40 km commute is quite a challenge.

Beautiful new bridge

The lake was once used commercially by carp farms, but today it is a model biotope, the water surface of which is maintained by a fishing club. The shore areas are overgrown and a number of environmental projects have been set up here. A 2.9 km circular path around the lake has made the water an important local recreation area, not only for the nearby new development area of Steilshoop. On its west side there is a large playground and barbecue area. The Ohlsdorf main cemetery borders directly on the northern shore of the lake. In the south the lake water flows via the Seebek first into the Osterbek and finally into the Alster. The islands are protected and can be easily observed from the hiking trail. Not far (approx. 800 m away) from Bramfelder See is the Alte Teich, which is also known as the "small" Bramfelder See.

The Bramfelder See is located in the Hamburg district of Steilshoop. It has an elongated shape and is fed by several springs, including the former Prökelmoor. It is about 1.2 km long from east to west. It is much narrower, about 400 meters in the east, and at its narrowest point it is just under 100 meters from the north to the south bank. Nowhere is the lake deeper than three meters. A path that is almost three kilometers long leads around it. Of the four islands, two are only separated from the bank by narrow water channels. The largest island is in the eastern part in the middle of the lake and is about 600 m² in size. For several years now, there has been a large colony of grey herons on this island. In 2005, over 30 pairs of herons bred there.

The Seebek is a small stream in Hamburg, which flows from the Alter Teich, first underground to the Bramfelder See and then above ground further southwards, before flowing into the Osterbek after about three kilometres.

Crossing the Bramfelder See at this point is now possible again via the new bridge. The new bridge is located near the site of the old bridge, which was demolished in 2015. From now on it is again possible to take a "little walk" around the Bramfelder See and see the water from a different perspective. The new bridge was co-financed with funds from the Integrated Urban Development (RISE) framework program.
