The Göttingen Kiessee is a 15-hectare lake on the southwestern outskirts of the city. Formed by gravel mining, it has become one of Göttingen's most important recreational areas. The approximately 2.5-kilometer-long lakeside path is popular with joggers, walkers, and anglers throughout the year. The lake is only one to two meters deep and, as a result, is threatened by algal blooms and accelerated silting. To improve the freshwater supply, an inlet was built in 2003 to divert water from the Leine River, which flows east of the lake, into the lake. From an ecological perspective, however, this measure is completely pointless, as intensive agriculture in the Leine catchment area washes large quantities of fertilizer into the river, and these nutrients further accelerate the silting of the Kiessee. A popular destination all year round. In the past you could even go ice skating on the gravel lake in the “good” winters. In summer, as well as in spring and early autumn, you can rent pedal boats/rowing boats here. Otherwise, there are plenty of places to lie down on the very large lawn, which invite you to relax or even have a barbecue (please only use the barbecue and no open campfire). Because you can wonderfully walk around the lake completely, either by hiking, running or cycling. On nice days it is often overcrowded at the weekend, so you can quickly find peace here either on weekdays or early in the morning. In winter, cormorants have nested here for a few years and have taken up winter quarters at the gravel lake. Other wild birds and ducks can also be wonderfully observed here.
