Purpose The Kelbra Dam was built to protect against flooding. Its flood retention basin/reservoir serves to collect the water flowing from the Helme River and its tributaries from the Harz Mountains into the southern Harz foreland. The reservoir serves for irrigation, fishing, and recreation. Since 1978, the lake and the designated floodplain to the west have formed the 14.53 km² Ramsar Protected Area 176, Helme Reservoir Berga-Kelbra, which overlaps in the southwest with the combined Natura 2000 area Kyffhäuser – Badraer Schweiz – Solwiesen (ID 4632-302). Reservoir The Kelbra Reservoir is located on the Helme River behind the Kelbra Dam at the northwest foot of the Kyffhäuser Mountains.
