In the Kyffhäuser Nature Park, you can expect steppe-like landscapes, over 1,000 plant species, and even salt steppes. Over 40,000 cranes stop in the area every year. Along the certified Kyffhäuser Trail, you can also discover highlights such as the Kyffhäuser Memorial, the Barbarossa Cave, and the Panorama Museum. At the northern edge of the nature park is the Kelbra Reservoir, also known as the Kyffhäuser Sea. The lake is a popular destination for swimming and canoeing in summer. Hiking trails into the nature park also start here. More information: https://nationale-naturlandschaften.de/gebiete/naturpark-kyffhaeuser

Purpose The Kelbra Dam was built to protect against flooding. Its flood retention basin/reservoir serves to collect the water flowing from the Helme River and its tributaries from the Harz Mountains into the southern Harz foreland. The reservoir serves for irrigation, fishing, and recreation. Since 1978, the lake and the designated floodplain to the west have formed the 14.53 km² Ramsar Protected Area 176, Helme Reservoir Berga-Kelbra, which overlaps in the southwest with the combined Natura 2000 area Kyffhäuser – Badraer Schweiz – Solwiesen (ID 4632-302). The reservoir and flood retention basin are jointly and cooperatively managed by the Thuringian Long-Distance Water Supply and the Saxony-Anhalt Dam Authority.

Reservoir The Kelbra Reservoir is located on the Helme River behind the Kelbra Dam at the northwest foot of the Kyffhäuser Mountains. It extends through the Goldene Aue (Golden Meadows), predominantly in the Mansfeld-Südharz district of Saxony-Anhalt. Small reservoir sections in the southwest and south, located on the border between the Kyffhäuser district and the Nordhausen district, are located in Thuringia. Initially, only a green – i.e., normally dry – flood retention basin was planned for the reservoir. However, a main dam was then built to create a permanent reservoir, and a secondary dam to maintain a basin that would absorb the masses of the Helme River system in the event of flooding. Thus, there are now two adjacent basins, the lower of which is permanently impounded – i.e., a permanent reservoir – at a lake level of 155.25 m above sea level. NHN has 12.3 million m³ of storage capacity and an area of about 6 km²; it is 5.5 m deep and 3.8 km long at maximum.

Dam The main dam of the Kelbra Dam is located in Saxony-Anhalt, south of Berga and west of Kelbra, and the secondary dam is located east of Auleben and southwest of Berga; the latter extends into Thuringia at its southwest end. Both dams are constructed of earth, gravel, and cohesive soils. They have an inclined inner lining of clay on the waterside. The crest of the main dam, which is 12.7 m high above the foundation base, is 4,066 m long and 7 m high above the valley floor; the acute-angled secondary dam is 3,379 m long.

The Kelbra dam, behind which the Kelbra reservoir, also known as the Kelbra flood retention basin, is located, is a dam built between 1962 and 1966 on the Helme in Saxony-Anhalt (Mansfeld-Südharz district). Its reservoir/flood retention basin, located with small parts in Thuringia (Nordhausen district and Kyffhäuser district), is around 6 km² in size.
