Church of the Holy Spirit, Bern The history: First a hospital, then a magnificent sacred building The Church of the Holy Spirit in Bern has been mentioned since 1228. Built as a hospital church, it combined church, monastery and hospital until the 18th century. The Holy Spirit Hospital was run by the brothers of the lay order of the Holy Spirit, who cared for marginalized people there. These included, for example, the poor sick, the elderly, the disabled, pilgrims, beggars, orphans and unmarried pregnant women - anyone who needed a place to sleep, eat or be cared for. The hospital church was built at its current location, which was far outside the city at the time. The area outside the city served as community property, where many citizens of the city of Bern had their gardens. At the same time, the hospital church was on the important road to Murten and Fribourg. With the last expansion of the city around 1345, the hospital church was integrated into the city of Bern and was now located directly behind the city wall at the main gate, later known as the Christoffel Tower. The new district was called "Heiliggeist-Neuenstadt". The first new building of the hospital church was built between 1482 and 1502. This spatially separated the hospital wing from the sacred space. The church also received a tower and a choir. In 1655, the sacred space was further enlarged and the hospital wing was now housed in a new building next to the church. Due to the dilapidated state of the hospital church, a new building was suggested in 1722. The hospital was moved to the current site of the Burgerspital and the church was rebuilt according to the Evangelical Reformed denomination. In 1729, the new baroque magnificent building was inaugurated, as it has been preserved to this day. Bundesplatz, Bern, History The square that is now called Bundesplatz was created at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. At that time, the area of the Oberer Graben (part of the medieval city fortifications from 1256), which had been filled in between 1570 and 1630, was expanded and redesigned towards the east. The square in front of the new parliament building (Bundeshaus) was initially called "Parliament Square" and then, from 1909, "Bundesplatz". Bundesplatz is lined by the government and parliament buildings of the Swiss Confederation on the south side and by the mighty buildings of the Swiss National Bank in the east and the Bern Cantonal Bank in the west. On the north side are Bärenplatz and Waisenhausplatz, which were also created by filling in old defensive ditches. Together, the three squares now form the heart of the city center. The Battle of Neuenegg took place on 5 March 1798 in Neuenegg, in the canton of Bern, and pitted a Bernese army commanded by Adjutant General Johann Weber and Colonel de Graffenried against the French troops of General Jean Joseph Magdeleine Pijon. The latter surprised the Bernese soldiers stationed in Neuenegg during the night and pushed them back. Confederate relief troops, commanded by Colonel de Graffenried, then moved to the scene of the battle and in turn pushed back the French, who moved away from the battlefield.
