Due to its height and attractiveness, the Dachstein has been a popular destination for mountaineers since the 19th century, after the Grimming was long considered the highest mountain in Styria. The reddish south walls made of Dachstein limestone, around 1 km high, are also famous.

The Loser is a 1837 m high mountain in the municipality of Altaussee on the northern shore of Lake Altaussee. Its distinctive, castle-like summit makes it a landmark of the Ausseerland. The Loser is accessible via the Loser Panorama Road, which was opened in 1972 and leads up to 1600 m above sea level. It is a popular hiking mountain due to its easy accessibility and its excellent view over the Ausseerland, the Totes Gebirge and, above all, the Dachstein with its glaciers. There is a cross on the summit.
