The present-day castle had two, possibly even three, predecessor structures. After the Baden Margrave Hermann V was granted the town of Ettlingen, founded by the Hohenstaufen dynasty, by Emperor Frederick II, his son, Margrave Rudolf I of Baden, built a castle complex in the mid-13th century – possibly on the remains of a Hohenstaufen predecessor structure. However, no previous structure has yet been identified. The lower floors of the keep in the castle courtyard, which are still preserved today, date from this period. A magnificent Renaissance castle followed in the 16th century. Two round corner towers were added to the south wing, and the keep was given a half-timbered upper floor. The three-wing Renaissance complex surrounding the old keep, completed in 1600, was destroyed along with the entire town by French troops in 1689 during the War of the Palatinate Succession (Wikipedia).

The route leads through the foothills of the Black Forest, so there are some ups and downs.

When riding downhill, you'll be warned several times about dangerous sections with a gradient of 15%. However, since the route is very well maintained and has impeccable asphalt, nothing can really happen if your bike's brakes are in good condition.

Great views of the Murg Valley and the Rhine plain. The panoramic view is even better if you climb the tower. The road leading up has been patched several times and is quite steep, so be careful on the descent.

Well-developed road with gentle ups and downs and relatively little traffic.

One of the best spots for sunsets. After a rather tough climb, the impressive panoramic view over the Murg Valley, the Rhine Plain, and the Vosges Mountains (which can also be viewed via webcam) is a reward. However, the summit is regularly very busy on weekends. Since cars and motorcycles can drive up to the summit, the approach and descent on the narrow, winding road can be quite stressful when there's a lot of traffic, so it's better to come during the week. The inn is closed then, however – it's only open Saturday and Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
