From May to September, the market takes place every last Saturday of the month from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Landsgemeindeplatz (town square). The market women promote the vibrancy of the village of Trogen, social interaction, and the coming together of young and old from near and far.

The Holy Cross Chapel on the main street was rebuilt after the devastating village fire of 1560. The stained-glass windows depicting the five mysteries of the Sorrowful Rosary were created by Ferdinand Gehr in 1964. Despite the sometimes large number of tourists, the chapel is a place of peace and contemplation. The stained-glass windows enchant the daylight, which falls golden into the Holy Cross Chapel. The installation of these, for their time, very modern stained-glass windows sparked much discussion in the Appenzell region and drew some criticism. Everyone is encouraged to come and experience the atmosphere of this small chapel for themselves.

In 1853, some giant sequoia trees were planted here. These can grow to almost 100 meters tall and live for up to 3,000 years.

Trogen lies high above the left bank of the Goldach river on a hilltop spur. Around the village square, regularly spaced timber-framed buildings stand alongside beautiful farmhouses and factory buildings; Trogen is also known for the Pestalozzi Children's Village.
