The Messeler Falltorhaus was first mentioned in 1630. At that time, the building served as a customs house for the road toll that was levied by the Landgraves of Darmstadt for traffic with the County of Hanau. A "Falltorknecht" who lived in the house was responsible for ensuring that the "Messeler Schlag" fall gate was closed and opened at the appropriate time. After 1710, the building was converted into a district forestry office. The current forestry house from 1890, on the foundations of the previous building, is a shingled single-storey building.

The earth is around 4.5 billion years old. To get an idea of this enormous temporal dimension of the earth's history, we recommend hiking the so-called timeline trail in Messel. The 3.5-kilometer-long route begins at the local museum, then leads through Messel and the Grube Messel district and then continues through the forest. It finally ends at the road junction to the Messel pit. The path is marked by stone steles with the prehistoric horse symbol and painted footprints, and in the forest by a reddish-brown coating of smoldered oil shale. During the tour, steles mark important points in our earth's history, such as the end of the Cretaceous period 65 million years ago. Assuming a step width of 70 cm, one step corresponds to around 900,000 years in the earth's history. The dinosaurs only died out 72 steps from the goal and Homo sapiens only entered the world stage in the last 40 cm.

The pleasure palace, built by the Hessian Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig between 1890 and 1909, was last used as a restaurant, but currently makes a rather closed impression.
