The Sequoia Gigantea (Giant Sequoia) belongs to the cypress family. Its name says it all. It is the giant among trees. Sequoias, the largest and oldest trees on Earth, reach heights of up to 100 meters and diameters of up to nine meters in their native Sierra Nevada in California (USA). The oldest trees there are about 3,000 years old. The sequoia group described here was planted in 1868 by the "Freiherrlich von Stummchen" (Baron von Stummchen), chief forester. The largest specimen reached a height of 41 meters and a trunk diameter of two meters in 1994. Part of the natural monument near Landstuhl is now 44 meters tall. The seven giant trees are located on the L465 between Landstuhl and Martinshöhe. A parking lot is located directly in front of them. The scallop shell on a sandstone indicates that the Palatinate Way of St. James passes directly by the trees.
