Sefton Park in Liverpool is arguably the best known and most loved by locals. Classified as a Grade One listed park by English Heritage, the magnificent 200-acre Park looks like a natural landscape rather than a man-made park. In spring the sight of millions of golden daffodils around the lake draws residents from across the city and carpets of bluebells give an impression of rural permanence. The park features many distinctive curved paths and driveways and beech and other indigenous British trees abound. Amongst the park's many features are a boating lake, replica statues of Eros and Peter Pan and a café. The park is also home to the famous Palm House, a fabulous glass-panelled building that has been restored to its former glory.

"The site of the park was once within the boundaries of the 2,300-acre Royal Deer Park of Toxteth which became "disparked" in 1591. The land eventually came under the Earl of Sefton's control. In 1867 the Council purchased 375 acres of land of the park's development for £250,000 from the Earl of Sefton. Sefton Park is one of the largest in the "ribbon of Parks" originally envisaged in 1850s by the Liverpool Improvement Committee and which came eventually to include Newsham and Stanley Parks. A European competition was launched to design a grand park. 29 entries were received and the competition was won by a French landscape architect Édouard André with work on the design also undertaken by Liverpool architect Lewis Hornblower. The park was opened on 20 May 1872 by Prince Arthur who dedicated it "for the health and enjoyment of the townspeople". "The figures on the gateposts represent atlantes (two figures of Atlas) and were originally located on a building adjacent to Liverpool Town Hall which stood from 1861-1928. When the building was demolished, the statues which were carved by Edwin Stirling, were rescued and relocated to the Harthill entrance to Calderstones Park." "Ornamental Gardens lie at the centre of the park and include the Flower Garden, originally a rose garden, and now providing a quiet area for admiring stunning annual bedding display and year round interest in its trees and shrubs. The original Walled Kitchen Gardens now provide a home for some of the outdoor botanical collection and the Japanese Garden was created as an apprentice scheme in the 1970s." "This Gothic revival style drinking fountain is located in Sefton Park near the South end of the lake and was designed by Lewis HornBlower and Edouard Andre who were responsible for the design of the park.   The fountain has a sandstone base and canopy supported by granite or marble pillars with four iron water basins, under the canopy are entwined dolphins.   The controls for the fountain are now blanked off and the feature sadly no longer works.   The fountain dates to 1872 when the park was opened by Prince Arthur." Sefton Park Lake is the largest of those included in this walk. Like the Greenbank Park Lake it has a cafe, The Boat House, and in common with the other two lakes you can walk all the way around it. Fishing is allowed here and judging by the number of anglers hoping to hook carp, tench or pike, it is a popular spot.
