The old railway bed between Langgeleedstraat and Duinhoekstraat has been repurposed. Many recreational cyclists and hikers can now take a gravel path that provides a direct connection to the French border at Bray-Dune.

The Paul Delvaux Museum, or Museum Paul Delvaux in Sint-Idesbald, houses a large art collection by the surrealist painter Paul Delvaux. The building, Het Vlierhof, the former home of artist John Bakker, was purchased by the Paul Delvaux Foundation, headed by Paul Delvaux himself. It was a white-painted fisherman's cottage with a stepped gable and a bell gable. The museum opened in 1982, adding two additional galleries in 1983. In 1988, the first underground exhibition gallery opened. In 1997, additional underground galleries opened beneath the museum's parking lot. The museum is managed by the Paul Delvaux Foundation, which was established in 1972. The museum aims to offer an overview of the evolution of Delvaux's work. Prints, drawings, oils, and watercolors are just a portion of the collection. A full-scale replica of his Brussels studio is also on display, and numerous objects bequeathed to the museum by the artist and his wife are on display. We recognize a keyboard, but without the keys. Does this point to an inability to express an image in language? Is our language inherently limited? Or does a sea of unknown possibilities lie open to us? Today, we connect with the world digitally, which offers both advantages and disadvantages. According to some, this leads to alienation from others, while for others it creates new possibilities and a more inclusive society. This artwork was created thanks to the collaboration of students from VTI Bruges, with the artist providing digital guidance. Through the concrete structure, you can see the sea on one side and the urban landscape on the other. Thus, it also resembles a stripped-down apartment building. This work is conceived as a counterpart to Jorge Macchi's 2023 work, "Dictionary of Dead Words": a wall installation with niches containing letters, like the initials on the side of a dictionary page. The building dates from the 1950s. The owners were of French descent. They owned a small tourist plane stationed at a small French airfield near Abbeville. Sadly, both died in a crash with their plane. The contractor who built this building on his own account was Alphonse Senterre. He was born in Paudure, a hamlet in Wauthier-Braine and Braine-l’Alleud, and started out as a bricklayer before embarking on a career as a contractor. On June 30, 1934, the couple attended an aviation event. To get there, they flew out with a pilot friend. The plane never arrived. It crashed in Brunembert, a small hamlet near Boulogne, killing all three passengers. In memory of his daughter and son-in-law, Alphonse Senterre had this apartment building built in 1936 (with water on all floors...). Originally, it was going to be called "Les Ailes brisées" (The Broken Wings), but a less tragic name was chosen: "Les Ailes picardes" (The Picardy Wings). This isn't the name of their flying club. Their club was called "L'aéro-Club Maurice Weiss" from Péronne. If you look closely at the building, you'll see that the wings on the front surround two initials: M and R for Marceline and Raoul. They were my grandparents... The building still exists because my father, little Jacques, who was orphaned at the age of eighteen months, sold the building apartment by apartment in the 1990s, thus preserving the building and preventing its demolition by developers. Another small note: the building was repainted a few years ago. Originally, the concrete was covered with tiny shards of glass sprayed into the fresh concrete, a technique popular in the 1930s called Cimorné, a portmanteau of the words "ciment" (cement) and "orné" (decorated)! This technique was invented by Pierre Petroons, a plasterer from Braine-l'Alleud. Intrigued?
