Stoense church is one of the few churches in the country that has the tower to the east. The church is open during the graveworker's working hours, but is also a nice sight from the outside. It is believed that the church was originally built in the Middle Ages, but it has been extended to the west and has been given vaults in the year 1600. With the rebuilding, the tower was added, built on top of the choir, which is quite unusual. Another unusual thing is that it is not known for sure who built this tower. On the east side of the tower is written the year 1600 and the initials NH and HH, but it is not known exactly to whom these initials belong. At the end of the 1700s, another expansion was made, this time to the north. You can still see various traces of the older characteristics that the church had, e.g. inside you can see remains of the bricked-up north door, and on the walls there are traces of round-arched windows. The church has a carefully carved and beautiful altarpiece with a sacrament scene carved with great ingenuity. All the twelve disciples and Jesus in the middle can be seen, and they all have individual and distinctive features. The church also contains a beautiful pulpit in carved work from around 1635, which depicts the story of Christ. In 1956, the major modernization of the church took place, where several of the church's features were repaired and replaced. This 12m high lighthouse, equipped with a sector light, was built in 1892 and was lit for the first time in December 1893. The first lighthouse keeper at Hou (from 1893 -1914) was Harald Valdemar Octavius Westerman, who was born in Svendborg in 1851. From August 1900 Harald Valdemar’s wife Laurine Dorthea Westermann was also employed as a lighthouse keeper here. In 1907 new lenses and a new light source, an incandescent burner fuelled by petroleum, were installed in the lighthouse. In 1923 it was the first lighthouse in Denmark to be fitted with the “autoform” incandescent burner, which were manufactured in England. Update 04/2025: The church has been completely restored and boasts a new coat of paint. It looks truly impressive.

As many have probably noticed, Snøde Church is currently being scaffolded and there is a lot of activity around the church. The reason for this is that the long-awaited project to renew the roof of the church tower and the much-needed whitewashing of the entire church and painting of the windows on the outside has now started. All church activities will continue unchanged during the renovation period. The church bell will not be in use for daily ringing, but only for services. According to the prepared schedule, everything should be ready by the autumn holidays, so we hope that the weather will be on the side where the work can continue. The church's craftsmen will do everything they can to make it as trouble-free as possible, but of course we must also accept that it is a workplace for them. (Notice Summer 2024)

At the end of the 18th century, the church was extended again, this time to the north. Various traces of the original church can still be seen, such as the remains of the brick north door inside and the structures of the former round-arch windows on the walls.

The nave and chancel are in Romanesque style and were built around the year 1200. The interior of the church is beautifully decorated with slender half-columns and beautiful capitals above. Around the year 1500, the walls were raised and a chapel, tower, porch and vaults were added. The beautiful altarpiece and pulpit were made in Renaissance style in 1610 and 1635 respectively. The pulpit is characterized by extremely excellent carvings. In several places, beautiful Romanesque picture squares are inserted in the church walls. In the chancel there is a well-preserved gravestone for Hans Steensen, Margrethe Basse and their son Christoffer, and in the Steensen family's family grave under the church is, among others, the district judge Vincens Steensen, who is best known for his brave fight in the defense of Langeland during the Swedish Wars in the 17th century. The church was rebuilt in 1874-75.
