The medieval village is perched on a travertine cliff overlooking the Castellano River valley below. From the belvedere garden and the village streets, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the surrounding countryside, including the dam and the Talvacchia Lake basin.

The Lombards settled on this easily defended rocky ridge high above the Castellano river. The necropolis left by the Germans is truly special and is one of the greatest finds of the early Middle Ages. Later, the monastery played an important role and gave the economy a new boost, until it came under the administration of the city of Ascoli between the 12th and 14th centuries. The high rocky ridge gives the place a special character. The village is accessed through the only remaining gate and is characterized by a series of narrow streets that connect the various squares until they meet at the church of San Lorenzo with its bell tower. Every space has been skilfully used by the various houses that have arisen over the centuries. They are anchored in the rocks and lean against each other. This has created several breathtaking views in the few gaps between the houses, from where you can enjoy a beautiful view of the surrounding panorama.

Lake Castel Trosino is located in Ascoli Piceno in the medieval town of the same name, full of panoramic points and historical-naturalistic assets, such as the large Lombard necropolis with 34 tombs, rich in precious manufactures made of glass, gold and silver. The lake is formed by the damming of the Castellano stream, a right tributary of the Tronto river. Downstream of the dam it is possible to see the confluence of the river inside the Roman aqueduct that brought water to Ascoli, while upstream of the lake are the famous sulphurous water springs (salmacina), already known by the Romans, some of which are still visible despite the presence of the lake and can be reached thanks to the cycle/pedestrian path created for this purpose. Furthermore, along the lake, there is a park where you can go hiking and mountain biking. Adults and children can also observe the animals that live in this environment, such as herons and fish, thanks to the observation point on the side of the lake. The small church of San Bartolomeo, from 1474, has a rectangular plan and a single nave, with a double-pitched roof, a bell tower with a four-pitched roof and a small cross at the top. The portal of late-Gothic lines is surmounted by a mighty architrave that rests on two reversed-leaf brackets and small diamond points with the Sgariglia coat of arms in the center, as it was owned by the noble Ascoli family. From the imposing chestnut forest, the main path leads to a clearing located on a huge travertine spur, overlooking the forest. On the rock face, you can see, at the top right, the fascinating structure of the Hermitage of San Marco, a natural cavity closed by a church-shaped building with a bell tower and connected to the path by a stone staircase. The wall, in Romanesque style, is made of ashlar stones and has a single-lancet window and five double-lancet windows. In ancient times, the building housed a convent founded by Cistercian monks at the beginning of the 13th century and consists of two overlapping rooms, connected by a staircase resting on the rock. It is a very “poor” construction, which recalls the Benedictine monastic rule. Inside the Hermitage, it is still possible to find traces of the primitive frescoes painted by the monks on the walls and on the vault of the lower room. On the ceiling of the cave, the splendid “tapestry” of maidenhair fern is noteworthy. The Hermitage of San Marco has been restored and brought back to its maximum splendor. You have to find your way past the transmission/reception masts, but then a mighty panorama opens up over the valley of Tronto and Ascoli Piceno.
