If you want to Google it, it's called "Von Velen Anlage." There, you can see replicas of settler buildings from ancient times, including round huts that look like they date back to the Stone Age. A short boat trip through the surrounding canals is also offered. The complex, however, is not at this location, but on the other side of the street.

The two peat boat pullers on the Splitting Canal, even if they are only cast in cast iron, depict the tradition of towing ships, in which a man pulled up to ten barges along the towpath behind him on a rope. They tell of the long-gone fen culture in the Emsland region.

Aschendorf Moor Trail Hikers can experience a piece of authentic Papenburg on this trail. The Aschendorf Moor Trail is a 1.8-kilometer circular route that leads through the "Aschendorfer Obermoor / Wildes Moor" nature reserve. Various information panels provide information about the flora and fauna of this unique habitat, parts of which have been preserved here and are being regenerated in rewetting areas. The panels also point out the areas of still-living raised bog, which continues to grow upwards year after year: a few mineral salts from the air and rainwater are sufficient for the continuous peat formation. The hike along the Moor Trail is particularly attractive from June to September, when heather and campanula bloom pink – a magnificent sight, especially from the viewing platform. The Aschendorf Moor Trail can be explored independently year-round, and guided tours for groups are available upon reservation.

Two men or a horse pulled the peat barge across the canals. At that time there were fewer paved roads and fewer bridges. Imagine the hard work today, especially in the rain and against the wind!

The von Velen complex is named after the founder of the city of Papenburg, Dietrich von Velen. The Papenburg houses built here and furnished with old furniture vividly show the living conditions of the town's inhabitants in earlier times. Under the motto "From peat cutter to deep sea captain" visitors to the von Velen complex are guided through the Fehn open-air museum by experienced men and women from the museum team. During a journey through the past, the history of the city of Papenburg and its people is experienced first hand. The story tells of the formation of the moor, peat mining and the shipping of the peat, the life of the early settlers in the primitive moor cottages, but also of deep sea shipping and shipbuilding at Papenburg's formerly numerous shipyards. At the end of the journey through time through the nursery of the city of Papenburg, visitors are invited to an idyllic boat trip on the MS Michaela or MS Leidi. The small boats, powered by an electric motor, glide silently under bridges and trees on the von Velen Canal to an idyllic lake. Here, guests are treated to a picturesque view of the huge winter garden of the Historical-Ecological Education Center (HÖB), which fits in perfectly with the overall picture of the beautiful nature around the lake. After passing under several bridges, experienced skippers steer the boats to a modern residential area built according to ecological principles. Highly interesting houses and wonderful gardens as well as the local nature and flora amaze the boat guests. Afterwards, every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday in the old captain's house, the Papenbörger Hus, from 11:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., there is the opportunity to enjoy a hearty buckwheat pancake meal with real East Frisian tea or to linger over coffee and cake. Guests of the Von Velen complex also have the opportunity to marvel at the beautiful Von Velen sculpture garden, which is part of the open-air museum and is particularly beautiful in spring. The Mutte also differed in size from the Tjalk. The latter was about 14 m long and up to 4 m wide, while the Mutte was about 9 to 11 m long and about 3.20 m to 3.50 m wide. The highlight is on the Splitting Canal, just before the von velen complex Muttschiff = peat barge of the early settlers The Muttschiff served the Papenburg settlers for centuries as a means of transport for the mined peat and as a watercraft on the canals and the Ems. This ship, similar to the Dutch Tjalk, was a typical flat-bottomed ship. The shallow water depth in the canals running through the city of Papenburg alone meant that the Muttschiffs needed a shallow draft, i.e. a ship without a beam keel.
