The Upper Gate provides access to and from the old town of Ilanz. It was built in the Middle Ages and was one of four gates providing access to the town. Today, two of these city gates still exist: the beautifully painted Upper Gate and the more modest Red Gate.

The structure was built in 1717, and two baroque spheres proclaim the Christmas message. In the center field are the coats of arms of the Three Leagues. Directly above the archway is the city's coat of arms. Other coats of arms include those of the Capols, Salis, Schmid von Grüneck, and the coats of arms of Zurich and Bern with the text: IN HONOREM POT. DOM ORUM TUGINORUM ET BERNATUM HOC GRATTUDINIS MONUMENTUMPOSUIT JOH. GAUD. SCHMIDIUS DE GRUEN. PRAET. TIR AO MDCCXVII., in gratitude for his help in renovating the gate in 1717. Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary, Ilanz All three altars of the church were replaced during the renovation in 1954 by purchasing altars from other churches that were no longer needed. The two side altars were originally part of the Müstair monastery church. The main altar was bought by the Rueun parish and the tabernacle by Siat. Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary, Ilanz from 1879 The Catholic Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary is located in the center of Ilanz, near today's Landsgemeindeplatz. From 1877 to 1879, the Catholic parish had its own church built and soon after, its own cemetery. The Church of the Assumption of Mary and the rectory were built outside the walls of the town as part of the constantly growing "new town". The 1900 census showed a Catholic majority in the population for the first time. In 1954, more space was created for the growing parish, the church, originally built in the neo-Gothic style, was thoroughly renovated and equipped with baroque altars. The upper gate in the old town of Ilanz, also known as Porta Sura in Romansh, is richly decorated and painted. The ground floor, the actual entrance to the town, dates from 1513.
