We expected this to be a covered wooden bridge and were looking forward to sheltering from the rain in it, but alas, this modern wooden bridge does NOT provide cover from rain.

Malans at a Glance The municipality of Malans lies above the confluence of the Landquart and Rhine rivers. Together with the town of Maienfeld and the wine-growing villages of Jenins and Fläsch, it belongs to the Bündner Herrschaft region, which, due to its favorable climate, is also known as the "Garden of Graubünden." Two village fires in quick succession during the 17th century were decisive for the development of Malans. The reconstruction of the destroyed parts of the village was completed relatively quickly. Numerous stately patrician houses from this era still stand, particularly in the village center. Besides these patrician houses, the village impresses with its star-shaped layout of densely built streets around the center and with its large vineyards that extend right into the heart of the village. Also characteristic of this wine village are the massive walls along the streets, which wind their way through the vineyards to the village. This interweaving of buildings and vineyards, orchards, and enclosed gardens creates a unique rural idyll. In the upper part of Malans lies the Baroque Bothmar Castle complex with its spacious, multi-sectioned garden, accessible from the village via the hamlet of Im Bodmer. The core of the complex dates back to the first half of the 16th century, while its current form is the result of expansions in the early 18th century. Reformed Church of Jenins, built in 1745 The church in Jenins, a modest building situated between the town hall and the speaker's house, impresses with its Baroque tower and remarkable gravestones dating from the 17th to the 19th centuries. Giani Boner Winery, Malans Giani Boner Winery, Malans At the winery in the center of Malans, they process exclusively grapes from their own vines. They use traditional maceration in tanks. Aging takes place in tanks or barriques. In their modern facility, they bottle and cork the wines: approximately 25,000 bottles of red wine and 5,000 bottles of white wine per year. Two-thirds of this is sold directly to private customers, some goes to upscale restaurants in the region, and a small portion to select wine merchants throughout Switzerland. Bündner Herrschaft Cycle Route Pleasure Tour Directions After leaving the e-bike station in Bad Ragaz, the route leads to the Rhine. On the other side of the Rhine, you cycle along the river to Landquart. The route then climbs through the villages of Malans and Jenins to the highest point towards Heididorf. From here, the route descends through the historic towns of Maienfeld and Fläsch, as well as the Reggberge Mountains, until you cross the Rhine again. After a refreshment stop at the Kuppelwieser farm shop, you cycle along the Rhine back to Bad Ragaz.
