This hotel was built by John Mulligan and John W. "Watt" Thompson, partners in numerous ventures including mining, construction and real estate speculation. Their names adorn the keystones at the top of the façade. Built between 1907 and 1909 with stone from the local Metcalf Quarry, the hotel was the first three-story building in Kingman. The acrimonious end to the partnership in 1912 led to the literal division of the property with the construction of a dividing wall. This wall would remain standing until 1966. The hotel has a long-standing celebrity relationship. Edsel Ford was a guest there in July 1916. According to local legend, Clark Gable and Carol Lombard attended an impromptu reception in the hotel bar after their marriage at the Methodist Episcopal Church in March 1939. Senator Barry Goldwater often dined at the El Mohave restaurant, which opened in 1959.

The water tanks, once used to add water to steam locomotives, are more than 100 years old. One of the tanks was once inscribed with the words "1,000 Miles of Shoreline," a reference to Mohave County's proximity to the Colorado River. The tanks were rusty and leaking, and were scheduled for demolition in 1986. Betty McBrayer, a former Kingman resident, led a grassroots effort to save the tanks as historical artifacts.

Tlargest lizard in the United States is the Chuckwalla, which has a flat body and often reaches a length of about twenty inches. It is native to Arizona and parts of the southwest United States, including eastern California and southern Nevada. In honor of its prevalence in Arizona, Kingman has a giant chuckwalla statue located along Route 66. It is made out of metal and Italian mosaic glass and has a flatish back meant to allow people to sit upon the large lizard.

The White Cliffs Wagon Trail is a historical hiking trail that offers a glimpse into the region's past. This short, family-friendly trail follows the tracks of a wide, old wagon road carved into the sandstone by settlers in the late 1800s. Along the 1-mile out-and-back trail, visitors can see the distinct grooves etched by wagons surrounded by desert landscapes and dramatic sandstone cliffs. It's an easy hike near downtown Kingman, but like most hikes in the area, there is little shade so be prepared with plenty of water and sun protection and in the summer, start early in the day to beat the heat!

Not a very strenuous trail but it is long. I did the 7 mile loop in just under 3 hours and really enjoyed it. No shade so sunscreen, hat and water a must.
