A great highlight is all the handprints in the Wittmund pedestrian zone. I didn't count them, but there are a lot. If you're in the area, it's worth strolling through the pedestrian zone and seeing the handprints. The pedestrian zone itself isn't anything special.

Public restrooms in Wittmund – finally, a highlight with real added value. No view, no experience, but arguably the most important point of interest in the city. It probably deserves its red dot more than many a "view of…" highlight.

In June 2015, the Robert von Zeppelin and Aviation Museum opened in Wittmund's pedestrian zone. The work of the initiators, Friedrich Janssen and Rüdiger Teßmer, aims to remind both Wittmund residents and visitors of the region's closely linked history with aviation, and especially to introduce young people to the historic "Wittmundhafen" airfield, which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2016. The museum's namesake, Robert von Zeppelin himself, even appeared at the opening. The descendant of the legendary airship designer Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin, visited Wittmund for the fourth time for this event. In his speech, he referred to the city as "his second home." But that's not all. He has donated several aviation artifacts from his private collection to the museum, which visitors can view alongside works of art by local artists and many other exhibits. A large Zeppelin toy now adorns the museum's entrance area. It was built from stainless steel by the vocational schools in Wittmund and funded entirely by donations. The climbing frame is already very popular with young visitors. When the town of Esens was besieged by enemy troops in the Middle Ages, a traveling musician and his dancing bear happened to be within the walls. The fighting lasted for a long time, but the town, fortified with walls, ditches, and city gates, defied all attacks. The enemy attempted to starve the town out. When the need was at its greatest and surrender was only a matter of hours, the imprisoned bear accidentally broke free, climbed the tower of a city gate, roaring with hunger, and threw stones around. The enemy mistakenly concluded that the people of Esens still had enough provisions to feed even a bear. They broke off the siege, and the town was saved. In gratitude, the bear became the town's heraldic animal.

The artistically designed Wittmund District Hall is particularly impressive due to its façade and the tower-like structures on its roof. A few East Frisian coats of arms can be seen in the entrance area.
