The Chaplain's House and its Over 100-Year History Construction The Benzingen Chaplain's House was built in 1899 and served as a rectory and residence for the rector's housekeeper until the 1950s. After that, the house repeatedly stood empty for extended periods. Occasionally, it was used as housing for needy citizens of the Benzingen community. Renovation and Inauguration As the house became increasingly dilapidated due to its repeated vacancy, it was decided in 1982 to renovate it in partnership with the Sigmaringen Scout Chapter. According to their specifications, the house was converted into a hostel for youth groups. The inauguration took place in 1983. Closure In 2008, the Scouts terminated the lease. However, the parish was able to arrange for the chaplain's house to continue to be used as a hostel. In 2011, however, the hostel was closed with immediate effect for fire safety and building code reasons. According to the district office, a permit for accommodation had never been issued. After that, the house stood empty again. New Beginning Opening "Do what is necessary first, then what is possible, and suddenly you will achieve the impossible." (Francis of Assisi) After three years of construction, we were finally able to present the chaplain's house to the public on Sunday, June 14, 2015. In the cold January of 2012, a severe frost caused severe water damage, which damaged parts of the house. Since this water damage had rendered the house uninhabitable and unusable, the Board of Trustees subsequently decided to sell it to the highest bidder. The house was purchased by Mr. Günter Hahn, with the goal of renovating it from the ground up and making it usable again as a hostel in accordance with all building code requirements. Universally loved and over 100 years old: The Benzinger Water Tower has always been the flagship of the small community. This makes it so indispensable for the town. It is over 100 years old, consists of 56 steps, and is the landmark of a community. We're talking about the Benzinger Water Tower, which, although it has served its purpose for water supply, is still the pride of the Winterlingen district of Benzingen. You can see the tower everywhere in the village – but not only there. The water tower is visible from afar and has long since secured its recognition and status as a historical monument. The tower has remained unchanged throughout all this time. The foundation stone of the water tower was laid in 1920, when the community of Benzingen grew and needed to upgrade its water supply. "Up until this point, Benzingen had hardly any inhabitants and was supplied with water from three dams and seven wells," explains Peter Pawtowski, the first chairman of the Benzinger Water Tower Association. Livestock farming and agriculture grew in importance in the Swabian Alb, leading to an increased demand for water in Benzingen. The wells and dams quickly became obsolete: A pump house was built in the town center in 1920, and at the same time, construction began on the water tower, which would later become Benzingen's landmark.
