Anyone traveling along the Saale Cycle Path between Jena and Kahla should make a short stop in Rothenstein. The small village church with its distinctive tower dominates the townscape and tells the story of centuries of history in the Saale Valley. Surrounded by ancient trees and half-timbered houses, it invites you to a moment of peace – ideal for a breather on your bike. The churchyard offers a beautiful view of the gently sloping slopes surrounding Rothenstein, and there are shady spots nearby to linger. Especially in summer, the setting is almost picturesque – a quiet, authentic place away from the hustle and bustle of tourism.

+++New opening hours from August 1, 2025+++ The sculpture garden in Plinz was created by the artist Jochen Bach in the mid-1990s. He moved to Plinz in 1972 with his wife Gisa, then young architects, and transformed it into a very special place. He exhibited and sold his paintings in the former mill. Sadly, he passed away at the end of 2022 at the age of 80. I, his daughter, have now returned home and continue to run the gallery, selling and exhibiting my own works here alongside his paintings. We maintain and maintain the sculpture garden with private funds and would like to continue to share it with people who come to Plinz to find peace and inspiration. Since this is a rather time-consuming undertaking, we will be limiting access to two days a week starting August 1, 2025: Saturday & Sunday 🪴 Garden open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. 🖼 Gallery open from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Visits outside of these hours are only possible upon personal request. The station was sold, and the result is impressive. A lot of money was certainly invested in the reconstruction and extensive renovation. Well done!

The Oelknitz Church is a single-nave church with an almost square chancel, the lowest part of which is early Gothic (around 1250). In 1689, the old choir vault and triumphal arch were removed, thus raising the height of the chancel to the same height as the nave. A two-story church tower sits atop the choir masonry. The bell tower is located on the upper, significantly recessed, half-timbered floor. This created the church's striking appearance. During renovation work, small, bricked-up round and pointed-arch windows were discovered in the lower part of the chancel; these are still visible from the outside on the east side. Above them are large windows from the late 17th century. The nave had suffered greatly from the spring floods that regularly plagued Oelknitz. Therefore, a new building was necessary, as evidenced by the inscription "Built with God 1838" above the west portal.

The Saale Valley Bridge along the A4 motorway near Jena is not only one of the most impressive bridges in Germany, but also a significant monument to the history and progress of bridge construction. It carries the B88, two Deutsche Bahn tracks, the Saale River, and the Saale floodplain. With its 17 main arches, it rises as a striking arched bridge made of limestone masonry. At 794.27 meters long, it was once the longest motorway bridge in the former Reichsautobahn network and remains an indispensable component of one of Thuringia's busiest intersections.
