From its opening in 1747 until the beginning of the 19th century, "madmen" and orphans were also housed here. From 1826 onwards, the Luckau prison only housed convicted prisoners and so-called "correctors" - people considered "work-shy" such as beggars, vagrants, homeless people and prostitutes, as well as a few "wards", old people who were housed here for a fee. From 1872 to 1900, Luckau housed a women's penitentiary, then a penitentiary for men until 1957, finally a youth prison for male prisoners and after 1990 a remand prison for women and male juvenile prisoners and a prison for women until 2005.
