Update September 12, 2025: Cycle path below the Schiersteiner Bridge opened! As of today, the suspended cycle path is finally officially open and fully usable! 🎉 The concrete blocks that blocked access have been removed – now there is a safe and comfortable connection between Mainz and Wiesbaden again. ✨ Extra bonus: The Rettbergsau recreation area is now also easily accessible by bike. 📣 Janina Steinkrüger, Head of the Department of Transport: "We waited this year for the defects to be rectified. Even though we would have preferred an earlier opening, I am relieved that we can now announce the opening." 👉 Background: In November 2024, safety-related defects were discovered on the Mainz side. These were the responsibility of the Autobahn GmbH and have now been successfully remedied. 🌍 An important step towards increased cycling mobility, safety, and leisure quality in Mainz and Wiesbaden!

You should only cycle through the area if it's been dry for a while beforehand. The paths are unpaved, and when wet, it's like a mud bath.

Update August 15, 2025: Unfortunately, eight months after its planned opening, the footbridge remains closed on the Mainz side due to a defective sheet metal. Response to an email inquiry from Autobahn GmbH: "The towing plate to be replaced (a custom-made product weighing several hundred kilograms) has been ordered. However, there are delivery delays, which means that no statement on the installation date can be made at this time. Due to the aforementioned delivery delays and the vandalism damage that also needs to be repaired, the opening date of the cycle path and sidewalk cannot currently be determined with any certainty. Numerous deliberate damages at the construction site repeatedly lead to delays."

According to various newspaper reports, the pedestrian and cycle path between Rettbergsaue and Mainz remains closed. The reason for this is displaced concrete elements, each weighing approximately 400 kg. The reports refer to vandalism. One article even reported a self-experiment: Several people were unable to move the concrete elements, suggesting that technical equipment or vehicles were likely used to do so. This raises the question of who might have an interest in moving such massive concrete elements. It seems unlikely that private individuals would be capable of doing so or would have a motive. Could it be that construction workers, for example, deliberately wanted to secure the area to restrict public traffic and allow them to work undisturbed? Could it be that the construction management deliberately blocked the path—possibly to prevent delays or avoid liability risks—and staged the incident as vandalism to justify the closure? However, another article states: "Currently, the pedestrian and cycle path is only open between Wiesbaden and the Rettbergsaue. The section between Rettbergsaue and Mainz is still closed because work still needs to be done there. In this area, there have been several instances of vandalism at the barrier in recent weeks, which is why the construction site was secured with concrete elements." These contradictory accounts make it difficult to classify the situation. While graffiti is understandable as vandalism, the circumstances surrounding the displaced concrete elements and the closure of the path remain unclear. The footbridge was supposed to officially open as a Rhine crossing in December 2024, but is unfortunately blocked and closed on the Mainz side by concrete blocks due to repair work (including the replacement of a towing plate). Current status in consultation with the City of Mainz: "After consultation with the responsible departments and the owner of the Autobahn GmbH, further work is already underway with the goal of completely resolving the defects within the second quarter of 2025. A new opening date has not yet been set, but the City of Mainz continues to actively demand that the responsible Autobahn GmbH resolve the problem quickly, with great interest in its own interests." Accordingly, nothing should stand in the way of an opening in June 2025.
